‘Health MOT’s’ planned for people aged 65 and over arriving at A&E in England

Accident and emergency department of hospital

The NHS is set to transform emergency care for seniors with “Health MOT’s” for those aged 65 and over arriving at A&E. Announced by NHS chief Amanda Pritchard, this initiative aims to reduce hospital overcrowding and improve patient outcomes. According to research conducted by the NHS Confederation, in the UK, two-thirds of people admitted to hospitals are over 65 years old, and those over 85 account for 25% of bed days.

Addressing issues at the front doors of hospitals

Starting next April, A&E units will conduct rapid tests for frailty and other conditions in seniors. These assessments will cover blood pressure, heart health; mobility, nutrition, and respiratory history, ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate care. “Health MOT’s at the front door of A&Es for older people could be a lifeline for many,” says Pritchard. These checks help direct patients to the right support quickly.

Overcrowding in hospitals

  • According to an article written by the Guardian, more than a million people over 75 are admitted to hospital every year in England and about one in five are severely frail.
  • A&E units must start giving seniors a series of tests to see if they are frail or have any other underlying condition and then arrange whatever care they may need.
  • NHS England hopes the initiative will reduce the number of older people being admitted to hospital, and cut overcrowding, “trolley waits” and “corridor care”.

How effective have these measures been so far?

The acute frailty assessment unit at the Princess Royal hospital in Orpington, Kent, now gives a frailty score to more than nine out of 10 patients it admits aged 65 or over. This has helped the hospital get more patients home early and has doubled the proportion of those discharged home within a week. The frailty assessments have sped up patient discharge and improved outcomes, demonstrating the potential of this approach. The government aspires to reach success in hospitals all over the UK.

Health MOT’s for seniors represent a significant step toward better; more efficient care for England’s ageing population. These comprehensive health assessments aim to proactively address potential health issues before they become severe, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for older adults. By identifying and managing chronic conditions early, Health MOT’s can prevent hospital admissions and reduce the strain on the healthcare system. Furthermore, Health MOT’s promote a more sustainable healthcare model by focusing on prevention and early intervention, which can lead to better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs in the long run.
