In our society, it’s crucial to shed light on the unique experiences and struggles faced by individuals when it comes to their mental health. Prioritising mental health is essential for the overall well-being and quality of life.

Depression and anxiety among people is a significant concern. How common are mental health conditions?

  • 1 in 6 people or approximately 45.8 million adults report experiencing symptoms of Mental Health issues
  • 61% of adults with mental health conditions don’t have access to the necessary treatment.

 Battling Depression and Anxiety:

Here are are several approaches individuals can take to help them battle against anxiety and depression:

  • Reaching out: Opening up to someone and sharing what’s going on can really make a difference when you’re going through tough times. It’s okay not to feel okay, and keeping it all bottled up inside can really weigh you down. But reaching out, asking for help is where the magic happens. Don’t hesitate to lean on your support network and ask for the help you need. You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel when you let it out and let others in.
  • Taking care of your body:
    • Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals. Incorporating super foods into your diet can not only help sustain a healthier lifestyle, but can also provide all the essential nutrients your body need for optimal health. Take deep breaths, stretch or meditate: Meditation is known to reduce stress, depression and anxiety. However it can also help cope with chronic pain which is wide spread among individuals.
    • Exercise regularly: Research shows that a brisk 30 minute walk can boost your energy levels and mood by almost 75%. You don’t need to be doing strenuous workouts, a walk, jog or some simple stretches.
    • Get plenty of sleep!

Accessible Mental Health Services: According to a report by the Mental Health Foundation, only 14% of people with a mental health condition find it easy to access appropriate services. These services play a vital role in ensuring that individuals can access the support they need to thrive. Unfortunately, certain issues often go unnoticed or unaddressed, but there’s hope on the horizon. There are numerous accessible services available for people to lean on during challenging times.

A few examples of these services are: Mind, Rethink Mental Health and Samaritans.

Support groups, online communities, and social networks can provide a platform for sharing experiences, offering advice, and forming meaningful connections. Fostering connections with others who share similar experiences can be invaluable for individuals.

  • Mind offers a wide range of support services including information and advice, advocacy, and community outreach programs, with a focus on promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma.
  • Rethink Mental Health provides support for people affected by severe mental illness, offering helplines, online forums, and peer support groups where individuals can connect with others who understand their experiences.
  • Samaritans operates a 24/7 helpline providing emotional support for people experiencing distress or suicidal thoughts, as well as outreach programs and resources aimed at preventing suicide and promoting mental well-being.

These organisations help combat stigma, provide essential services, and promote a sense of community and solidarity among those affected by mental illness.

You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel when you let it out and let others in.
